Liquid crystal display technology can no longer meet the needs of the human eye for extreme picture quality, and technological change is imperative. Some top international companies, including Samsung and Apple, are beginning to seek to equip their future products with more advanced display technology. Therefore, MicroLED technology came into being. Compared with traditional liquid crystal display technology and organic light-emitting diode technology, MicroLED can achieve higher brightness, higher contrast ratio and wider color gamut, while also having lower power consumption and longer service life.

Since 2018, with the launch of conceptual products related to MicroLED by major manufacturers such as Samsung and Sony, the next-generation display technology and application market that the whole industry expects is accelerating to take shape. However, it is such a nearly perfect display technology that seems to have slowly lost its popularity in the past two years. Instead, MiniLED is hot. So, what is the current situation of MicroLED technology, which claims to replace OLED? What about its future?

What is MicroLED?

MicroLED technology shrinks light-emitting diodes and red, green, and blue LED pixels to the micron level, arranges them in a matrix of millions, and then seals them on the same substrate transparent glass to achieve high resolution, high contrast, vivid color and other superior performance. At the same time, MicroLED technology can also achieve ultra-thin, flexible, foldable, transparent and other characteristics, which also brings development possibilities for future smartphones, wearable devices, automotive infotainment systems, and virtual reality devices.

Additionally the power consumption of MicroLED is about 10% of that of LCD and 50% of that of OLED. The brightness can reach 30 times that of OLED, and the resolution can reach 1500PPI (pixel density). In short, MicroLED not only inherits the high efficiency, high brightness, high reliability and fast response time of inorganic LED, but also has the characteristics of self-illumination without backlight, small size, light and thin, and energy-saving. MiniLED will rather possibly replace the current mainstream display technology.

However, despite the obvious advantages of this technology, the possibility of its large-scale application and promotion is limited due to reasons such as high manufacturing difficulty and high cost.

What is Mini LED? Why is it very popular?

Actually MiniLED is a backlight technology, and it is still liquid crystal in essence. It has smaller and more miniature light-emitting diodes, which is simply an improved version of the traditional LED backlight. Compared with ordinary LED, MiniLED is much smaller, only 50-200 microns in size. Therefore, within the same large screen size, the density per unit area of MiniLED is higher, and the unit size of the light source is smaller, so that it is possible to achieve more precise local control of the entire backlight module. Mini LED technology can bring higher brightness and more effective light control, and greatly increase the upper limit of the black field of liquid crystal technology, thereby greatly improving the contrast ratio and presenting a more detailed display image.

In fact, MiniLED is a transitional technology between traditional LED and MicroLED. However, the MiniLED technology is less difficult and easier to achieve mass production, and it can still greatly improve the image quality of the current LCD liquid crystal. At present, a large-size MiniLED TV with great display effect just costs several thousand yuan, so MiniLED technology is s very popular.

Whether MicroLED or MiniLED, their future application prospects are still quite broad, and they are very likely to occupy a very important position in the display industry, leading the rapid development and innovation of the industry.
